JUNIOR BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

The junior classes here at Hertford Combat Academy (HCA) start from age seven and go through to age sixteen. The focus of the junior classes here at HCA is to provide a fun & safe environment for the juniors to learn. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art largely focused on ground fighting. This means that the juniors quickly become comfortable in close contact situations, learning how to use their bodies to create leverage and angles to obtain dominant control positions. This improves their self-confidence at the same time as helping with their physical development, concentration, decision making and self-discipline.

There are regular non stressful assessments/gradings to measure & record progress throughout their journey. Also, as part of the larger Odyssey BJJ team there are several inter-club meetings each year where the juniors have the opportunity to meet up with our other affiliated clubs, train together and join in competitions.

A typical Junior Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class at HCA looks something like this:

  • The class starts with both the instructors and participants showing respect and courtesy to each other by bowing formally.

  • A short warm up compiled of a series of fundamental movements applicable to BJJ.

  • Drilling of two or three techniques.

  • Live rolling/sparring for the last 10 minutes.

  • The class will end with both the instructors and participants formally bowing to each other.
